October 16, 1966 Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Sir Douglas Quintet, 13th Floor Elevators, The New Peanut Butter Sandwich. Jerry Garcia’s Middle Finger blogged: Having just posted about Garcia's October 1966 sit-in with Big Brother and the Holding Company, I'll follow on with what is even more interesting-sounding (though it apparently didn't come off that well).

Mojo Navigator R&R News no. 9 (October 17, 1966) gives a brief account of the evening, which apparently included a configuration ("One Night Only!", I assume) called The New Peanut Butter Sandwich, composed of the following (instruments are mostly presumed):

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (GD): organ
Jerry Garcia (GD): guitar;
David Getz (BBHC): drums;
David Freiberg (QMS): bass;
?? (Sir Douglas Quintet): rhythm guitar;
Gary Duncan (QMS): guitar;
John Cipollina (QMS): guitar;
?? ("negro blues singer"): ??.

The only other detail is that "They did a very long and boring pseudo-Butterfield blues instrumental." Not clear what the blues singer was doing sitting in on an instrumental, but anyway ... sounds interesting!
This may have happened on October 15 or October 16. FD-30 Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley

Then they all got on the bus with Stephen Gaskin and went away to the Farm, where they made tofu and birthed babies.

That's pretty dizzying to see it all in one place like that. It's easy to forget that the Dead were just one drop in an amazing sea of music. And lots else. (See all those '69, '70ish talks ... Gaskin and various gurus seemed to be regulars there.)

One of your dates is in conflict with the Dead's website. October 1, 1967 you have the Dead playing the Avalon Ballroom, while the Dead's official site has them across the Bay playing at the UC Berkeley Greek Theater. Unless they played a two-fer that day.

You seem to be confused - that's not what the list shows.

First off, that list was copied from this site:
http://www.chickenonaunicycle.com/FD%20Shows.htm

It shows Vanilla Fudge & the Charles Lloyd Quartet playing at the Avalon on Oct 1. Not the Dead. (The Dead actually did not play at the Avalon through most of 1967.)

There is a poster for the 10/1/67 Greek Theatre event, at which the Dead, Charles Lloyd & Bola Sete played:
http://www.deadlists.com/posters/1960s/19671001.html

And this is the poster for the Avalon show (very nice picture!):
http://www.classicposters.com/Vanilla_Fudge/poster/Family_Dog/85

Note that the starting time at the Greek Theatre was 1:30 pm, and the starting time at the Avalon was 9:00 pm.
That left Charles Lloyd enough time to play a set & make it to the Avalon for the evening's show, right?

And the 10/16/66 New Peanut Butter Sandwich thing looks to have been copied and pasted from my blog:

GREAT blog - love reading all the Cotati stuff. The non-attribution got me to look and I really like.

True, it's copied & pasted on the original COAU site, and they do attribute you.
If you're addressing me, while I'm guilty of numerous non-citations, I didn't post that list! Totally not my style.

No, I was talking about the original poster, and the text straight copied without attribution.

Links are so easy!

That's fine, easy mistake to make...while the Dead didn't play a two-fer that day, Charles Lloyd did!
